Character Information

Name: Nio Hashiri
Fandom: Akuma no Riddle
Canonpoint: When she walks away from Haru Ichinose in Episode 11, leaving her alone in the graveyard.
Gender: Female
Age: 15 (Probably. So it says.)
Physical Description: Looks like this. In canon, she has tattoos down her entire body, but those will be removed. Her 23 mark will be on the bottom of her left foot. (The part that’s ticklish as fuck.)

History: Bare-bones Wiki.

Nio somehow lost her family from young and “has no one”. Yuri Meichi took her in, and Nio is completed devoted to her because of that. However, it’s hinted the part of Nio’s loyalty is because of Yuri’s ‘Queen Bee’ ability, which means that Yuri has inborn magnetism that makes others want to serve and be loyal to her. All women in Yuri’s clan (including Ichinose Haru) have a chance of having this ability. Also, Yuri’s clan is so powerful that is controls and influences major events in the world, with members all over the globe, not just Japan. Nevertheless, Nio is loyal, and at one point was sent to the Kuzunoha clan to be trained and tattooed. The Kuzunoha clan is one of the two famous assassin clans in her world, with the Azuma clan being the other, and that’s where Nio got her abilities (see below) and trained to become a professional assassin.

She was put into Myojo Academy as a student, since Yuri Meichi was the Chairperson of Myojo Academy. Yuri decided to begin ‘Class Black’, a test for Ichinose Haru, to see if Haru has the ‘Queen Bee’ ability or the strength to survive the test. This test is actually to have Haru placed in a class with twelve assassins, with Nio being one of them, on the promise that if they succeed in killing Haru they will be granted any wish they desire. As the only person with direct ties to the Chairperson and knows the truth behind Class Black, Nio becomes the arbitrator of Class Black. (However, she’s still an assassin fighting for the reward. Even Yuri forgets that once.)

Class Black has a few rules. One, is that each assassin only gets 1 attempt to kill Haru, and Haru must be notified in advance with the advance notice given to each assassin. The assassin will then get 48 hours to kill her. If Haru isn’t killed in that time, the assassin is expelled. Two, is that they cannot involve or tell anyone outside Class Black about this whole gig. Three, anyone who breaks rule 1 or 2 will immediately be expelled. As the arbitrator, Nio has to make sure everyone keeps in line with the rules, spying on everyone via security cameras and stuff.

In the end, every single assassin fails to kill Haru, with Azuma Tokaku choosing to not try killing her at all. Nio and Tokaku are the only assassins left. The truth behind Class Black is revealed to Haru and Tokaku. Nio then takes Haru down to the graveyard underneath the school, dedicated to everyone who died for the sake of the clan Haru comes from. Nio leaves Haru to grieve.

This is history that hasn’t happened yet, but: after that, Tokaku decides to try killing Haru. Nio will then disguise herself as Tokaku and try killing Haru at the same time, since ‘it would be fun to kill Haru while looking like Tokaku’. However, Tokaku stabs her in the chest. Somehow, even though she coughs up blood and seems to die on the floor, she survives it. Nio stays in Myojo Academy, perhaps to stick close to Yuri or actually get real education.

Previous Game History: N/A

Personality:
”Going out and having a blast on a day like this gets your blood pumping!”

The first thing most people realize about Nio is how hammy she is. She’s always smiling from ear to ear, laughing and joking about things from the weather to the occult. Even if she’s insulted, punched, slapped or fought, that smile of hers won’t falter. She continues on, larger-than-life, seeming like the typical enthusiastic genki girl character. She’s upbeat, no matter what the situation, and it almost seems like she just can’t read the atmosphere. Hell, she’ll even salute and well “I’m a nobody!” if you ignore her or maybe ask her politely to. She’s got no qualms about it.

TOKAKU: I swear. Curses, my ass. Does she get the situation we’re in here?
HARU: Well, that’s Nio for you.

Of course, that’s just the surface. To normal people like their homeroom teacher, Nio has no reason to show anything beyond her optimistic, bubbly face that she greets the world and every disaster under the sun with. However, to other members of Class Black-- or perhaps, other members of a horror jamjar game-- she is much more than that. The first sign of things seeming off is whenever her smile turns into a dangerous Chesire-cat grin, and she happily explains the life-threatening circumstances revolving around Class Black. She may seem hammy and obtuse, but in reality, she knows exactly what’s going on. She just chooses to meet it with a great big smile.

”I’m the arbitrator, so…”

An important part of Nio’s character is how she seems to know everything that’s going on. In canon, that’s basically the truth, but outside of that? She has to know what’s going on. Underneath that unassuming facade, she’s trying her best to find out exactly what the hell is happening. What makes the people in charge tick, what makes her targets shiver, what makes the world go round-- she’s seemingly knowledgeable about everyone in canon not just because she’s the arbitrator. She was chosen to be the arbitrator because finding out secrets and then finding out how to exploit them is what she’s trained in.

”They manipulate their targets psychologically to rob them of their ability to know what’s real and drive them to their deaths or make them kill other people.”

Nio is an assassin. She doesn’t kill people by outright sneaking up and disposing of them. She specializes in manipulating them to their deaths, and sometimes, they don’t even need to lift a finger to physically harm them. With that in mind, Nio is definitely capable of feeling amusement and happiness-- it’s just that she shows those two traits all the time, even if she feels the opposite. Her smiling facade is simply a mask to achieve her goals. Which brings the question: what are her goals?

”There are some people who are saved by the power held by the clan. I want you to remember that.”

“I thought it’d be funny to kill Haru while looking like you, and I’d been prepping for it for so long…”

There are two motives we can pinpoint. In canon, she is seemingly devoted to the chairperson, Yuri Meichi, or the person who set up the game of Class Black. Nio claims that Yuri saved her when she had no one else. She is very serious about the rules of Class Black, and does not allow anyone to defy them, not even herself. She looks over every single assassin to make sure they keep in line, making sure Class Black runs smoothly. So, she could simply be driven by her loyalty to Yuri. However, she does show hints of her own sadism-- when a ruthless serial killer, Otoya, tries to break the rules, she tears at Nio’s clothes and ends up spotting Nio’s tattoos. Recognizing that she’s from the Kuzunoha clan, she’s immediately stricken with fear, and when Otoya returns in Episode 10, Nio’s mere presence is enough to make Otoya freeze up. Nio is still smiling while speaking to Otoya, though she’s using her signature Chesire-cat smirk that comes whenever she witnesses anything particularly interesting, or attempts to enact violence herself. She may enjoy tormenting others, or it could all be a byproduct. Whatever it is, her first priority seems to be the smooth running of Class Black. Since she’ll be pulled into a jamjar, her motive will most likely change towards finding out information and finding her bearings.

And nothing will get in her way.

”Ultimately, you’re the same as me. The only thing we know how to do is kill… we’re creatures from a rotten sea…

Whatever her goal, whatever her motivation, she’s still an assassin. Things like other people’s lives and mortality have to, unfortunately, get out of the way if they obstruct her. She recognizes how twisted her worldview is compared to ‘the people of broad daylight’, or rather, normal people who don’t have to deal with assassinations or super-powerful clans that control the world from the shadows. She knows that to them, her thinking might be ugly, even vile. But if she wants something, she’ll use all means necessary to get it. She also does not feel entitled to kindness or generosity-- she doesn’t expect it from anyone. If someone wants to use her for their own gains, then it’s just too bad for Nio. She can’t stop them from doing that, after all. She is perfectly aware that her loyalty to Yuri might be due to Yuri’s “Queen Bee” ability, and Yuri might ultimately be using her-- but that’s fine. She’s fine with that.

”What’ll be left in the end, is just me alone.”

Nio might be lonely, but for now, companionship isn’t what she wants. If there’s anything she wants-- from ice-cream to the chance of killing someone in a way she thinks humorous-- she’ll get it, by her own abilities, on her own. She might manipulate someone to help her, but in the end, she doesn’t expect them to willingly lend her a hand on their own accord. If they do, sure, cool, but she won’t be surprised if that hand is ever retracted (or chopped off). At one point, right before her apparent ‘death’ to Tokaku, she seems to lament her existence and how she’ll never be bathed in daylight-- or rather, how she’s an assassin. Nio is utterly convinced that she has had no one, since she was born. And thus, she will never truly be a ‘real person’-- someone who is genuine, someone who isn’t an act. Since her entire life revolves around manipulation and mimicry, she seems to think that she’s just that-- an endless two-faced act, not a person of her own volition.

”Congrats for graduating.”

All in all, Nio Hashiri is one big, enthusiastic facade that masks the assassin within. That assassin might want different things at different times, but most of all, that assassin wants to be in the know-- and survive. Nio will put in her all when it comes to pulling through and surviving. After all, you can’t get what you want if you’re dead. And if she ever sets her mind on wanting something, she’ll get it by any means necessary. She’s a self-proclaimed shell of a real person, and so, the least she can have is what she wants at the moment. Call it an inferiority complex taken to a new low or the ramblings of a madwoman, but if there is one word to describe Nio Hashiri, it would be driven.

Every action, from making friends to destroying someone, is all a calculated step to her next goal. Perhaps she wants freedom from this, but why would her feelings matter? She has no one in this world, after all. No one would listen to her.

In the end, she’ll be the one getting the first move. And she’ll be the one who wins.

Abilities:
Her superhuman abilities are automatically nulled with the loss of her tattoos.

Normally, these tattoos allow her to hypnotize and take mental control of their target. The tattoos have such powers of deception that she can even disguise herself as someone else entirely, such as the time she disguised as Azuma Tokaku in Episode 12. (However, in the end, these are all illusions and hypnotism. She cannot literally change her body shape, so if she takes the form of someone taller, and if someone pets her on the head, they’ll realize their hand can pass through the top of her hair. Yep.)

She was raised by the Kuzunoha clan, which specializes in driving people to death through deception and manipulation, so she can totally mind-fuck with people who are unprepared. This is probably how the Kuzunoha gain intelligence and information as well, through this manipulation.

(If she gets in, I’ll make permissions posts for interacting with her.)

Otherwise, Nio has no other superhuman abilities. She may be skilled in manipulation (or just fucking around and being hammy), but otherwise, she’s a normal human who is pretty skilled at fighting because she’s been trained for assassination since she was young.
